SQUARE ONE - hoax!

The rumour titillating social media since Wednesday - that Sondheim's final show, created with David Ives, was coming to Broadway - has sadly proved to have been nothing more than social-media mischief.

Square One was the working title for the show that Steve was collaborating on when he died, and it did indeed have a reading with Nathan Lane and Bernadette Peters. According to a mysterious message on a newly created Twitter account teasing the upcoming announcement, the show was seemingly slated for a Broadway run next autumn. However, representatives of the actors have confirmed that they are not booked for such a production, and Steve's estate has insisted that the show isn't finished and won't be staged any time soon.

Broadway fans will just have to make do with Into The Woods and Sweeney Todd...
