Stephen Sondheim at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe

Cover of the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe programme

If you're Edinburgh-bound next month for the Fringe, look out for these (surprisingly scant) Sondheim offerings.

The following shows are those that reference "Sondheim" in the 2024 Fringe programme, so if you want to experience Stephen Sondheim at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, check out:

Musicals and Opera (musical theatre, family-friendly)

LAMDA presents the next generation of musical theatre talent in a bold new production of the Tony Award-winning classic. Stephen Sondheim’s wickedly funny musical weaves together beloved characters – including Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella – for a surprising, subversive and thoroughly contemporary twist on the Tales of the Brothers Grimm. With lyrical ingenuity and dazzling music, Into The Woods will take you on an epic journey to discover what happens when fairy tale figures are faced with truth, consequences and the pain of growing up. Be careful what you wish for!

12:45 (1 hr 55 min) - Aug 2-10, 12-17, 19-24 - Greenside @ George Street

Musicals and Opera (musical theatre, family-friendly)

On an endless summer night, love's joys and complications play out in triple-time. Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure. When actress Desirée Armfeldt performs in the town of her former lover, old passions rekindle. Over the course of a weekend in the country, a tangle of love affairs is laid bare between four different intertwined couples. Both romantic and cynical, Sondheim's incandescent musical, featuring the classic Send in the Clowns, sparkles with wit, magic and fading glamour, spiked with regret and longing.

10:00 (2 hr 20 min) - Aug 2, 4-5, 8, 10-11, 14, 16-17, 20, 22-23, 25 - Assembly Rooms - Music Hall (#20)

Cabaret and Variety (storytelling, music)

Come revel in the oversized aspirations of Mychelle Colleary’s musical head-smash, a jazz-tinged autobiographical one-woman show recounting undiagnosed traumatic brain injury, too many prescribed drugs and a dearth of available therapeutic alternatives. Ambitious Underachiever is self-depreciating triumph of obstinately hacking the system despite a loss of self-worth, when society is telling you to just get over it. Includes classic tunes by Sondheim, Chaplin, Beck, and original songs by Colleary herself.

12.35 (55 mins) - Aug 2-5, 7-12, 14-19, 21-25 - PBH's Free Fringe @ Voodoo Rooms - Speakeasy (#68)

Musicals and Opera (musical theatre, character comedy)

Summoning Sondheim is a cabaret comedy séance that uses the power of musical theatre to summon us theatre kids' Lord and Saviour, Stephen Sondheim. Grace O'Keefe (co-creator of five-star Fringe sell-out Bad Teacher) and Jordana Belaiche (West End credits: Little Cosette in Les Misérables and Jane in Mary Poppins; yes, really) host a séance to summon Stephen Sondheim to save musical theatre. This love letter is a testament to Sondheim's legacy as one of the world's greatest artists and as a mentor to theatre-makers, exploring how we summon Sondheim every time we're in a theatre.

16:00 (1 hr) - Aug 13-25 - Just the Tonic at The Mash House - Just the Attic (#288)

Music (classical, swing)

The acclaimed quintet Brass Tracks, now in their second decade as a group, bring power and fullness of melody to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Brass Tracks will celebrate the very best of the last 100 years of Broadway, showcasing some of the most memorable songs arranged and adapted especially for a brass ensemble, from the music of Elton John, through to traditional hits by Sondheim, to Rodgers and Hammerstein. Brass Tracks are described by the press as demonstrating the glorious majesty of the pieces, as well as having excellent technique and giving close attention to stylistic detail.

18:30 (1 hr) - Aug 12 - artSpace @ St Marks

Cabaret and Variety (musical theatre, live music

All the world’s a stage, let’s protect it. Multi Olivier Award-winning West End star Janie Dee (National Theatre’s The Motive and the Cue and Follies; Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends) confronts the climate crisis, and celebrates our beautiful world, through song and spoken word. Unusual and inspiring guests join this green twist on classic cabaret, asking how we can each make a difference in the fight for our planet. Playful, radical, informative, and ultimately hopeful. ‘Is there a more enchanting actress on the British stage than Janie Dee?’ (Times). ‘Passionately green... hilarious... pure class’ (MusicalTheatreReview.com).

14:20 (1 hr) - Jul 31 Aug 1-6, 8-12, 14-19, 21-26 - Pleasance Dome - Queen Dome (#23)

Musicals and Opera (vocal, music)

Into its fourth decade of performances on the Fringe and in the superb setting of The New Town Church (formerly St Andrew’s and St George’s West), Fife-based vocal concert group Ensemble is delighted to build on last year’s concert and devote the whole programme to Stephen Sondheim. With excerpts from Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music and others, Ensemble aims to show why, according to Barack Obama, Sondheim 'reinvented the American musical'. Don’t miss being part of our Company on the last Sunday of the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe!

19:30 (1 hr) - Aug 25 - Edinburgh New Town Church - Church (#111)
