"Here We Are" rumour - is Sondheim's final show coming to the National Theatre next year?
For a show that generated a decade of speculation, rumour and even a fake production announcement complete with cast list and poster, it's not surprising that Here We Are continues to be the subject of conjecture and guesswork, particularly in reference to a UK transfer.
An interesting and credible-sounding thread on TheatreBoard.co.uk is currently discussing a transfer of Sondheim's last musical - written in collaboration with David Ives - to the National Theatre, likely next year. According to the source of this rumour, some of the original cast will transfer, and there is a chance that the production will be filmed. Another post "confirms" that this is happening and that it's to be staged at the Lyttleton.
As always, discussion threads should be taken with a healthy pinch of salt, but it's very likely that, in one way or another, the show will make it over to the UK at some point in the not too distant future. There has been much speculation - and wishful thinking - about productions at the Menier, the Old Vic and the Bridge. UK fans desperate to see this last, surrealist work by Sondheim, won't care where it's staged, just as long as transfers somewhere!
