Antonio Banderas to direct Styne & Sondheim's GYPSY at the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Malaga

PRESS RELEASE: The mother of all musicals! The jewel of the Golden Age of Broadway. Gypsy is one of the best American musicals of all time, and for the first time it comes to Spain. With a libretto by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, it is an original production by Antonio Banderas, with musical direction by Arturo Díez Boscovich, translation of the libretto by María Ruiz, translation of the lyrics by Roser Batalla and choreography by Borja Rueda.

Gypsy, the fourth musical directed by Antonio Banderas, boasts an incomparable score, a brilliantly conceived libretto, and one of the greatest lead roles ever to grace the Broadway stage.

Musical theatre star Marta Ribera [who stopped the show as Joanne in the sensational Soho production of Company in 2021/22] stars in Gypsy as Rose, accompanied by Lydia Fairén [previously, Marta in Company] as Louise, and Laia Prats as June. The show will feature three of the original choreographies by Jerome Robbins (one of the great choreographers and directors in the history of musicals such as West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof among many others).

Gypsy is the definitive story about an ambitious “stage mother” who strives for her daughters’ success, while secretly yearning for her own. Loosely based on the memoirs of burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, its central plot revolves around the character of Gypsy’s mother Rose, a ruthless woman who seeks to turn her daughters into vaudeville stars at any cost.

Loosely inspired by 1920s and 1930s America, when vaudeville and burlesque were born, Arthur Laurents' landmark musical explores the world of show business with humor, heart and sophistication.

The famous score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim includes great musical hits such as "Everything's Coming Up Roses", "Let Me Entertain You", "You'll Never Get Away from Me", "You Gotta Have a Gimmick" or "Together (Wherever We Go)".
