Sondheim receives Freedom of the City of London

Sondheim was joined by Cameron Mackintosh, Imelda Staunton, and Society Patrons Julia McKenzie and Maria Friedman at the Guildhall on Thursday to receive the Freedom of the City of London.
The honour was bestowed by The Guild of Freemen of the City of London in recognition of Steve's outstanding contribution to musical theatre, and was handed over during his recent visit to the city to watch the tech and dress rehearsals, and first preview, of Company at the Gielgud Theatre.
The ceremony at the Guildhall saw Steve awarded his freeman certificate, and a guide to conducting his life in an honourable manner. It also granted him – albeit symbolically – the right to drive sheep over London Bridge, carry a naked sword in public and, should he ever fall foul of the law, be hanged by a silken rope!
Please join us in congratulating Steve on this much deserved recognition.
