SSSSPOTY winner Erin Doherty to join The Crown
Erin Doherty, winner of The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition in 2015, is to play the role of Princess Anne in the third season of the hit Netflix series The Crown.
Erin, who won over the audience and judges with her "Broadway Baby" at the Garrick Theatre in our annual competition, recently played the character Jessie Marsh in Call The Midwife, and was the lead in Alan Ayckbourn's epic The Divide (2017) at the Old Vic. Other theatre credits since winning SSSSPOTY include A Christmas Carol (Old Vic), My Name is Rachel Corrie (Young Vic) and Junkyard (Headlong/Bristol Old Vic/Theatr Clywd/Rose).
She also performed along with other SSSSPOTY winners at Hey, Old Friends! – the Society's 85th Birthday Gala for Stephen Sondheim at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 2015.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, joining Erin with be a glittering cast: "Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret, taking over from Vanessa Kirby; Jason Watkins will play Harold Wilson; and Ben Daniels will portray Antony Armstrong-Jones. Still to be determined is who will take over as the Queen Mother (played by Victoria Hamilton in seasons one and two.)" The Queen will be played by Olivia Colman, who takes over from Claire Foy, and Tobias Menzies replaces Matt Smith as the Duke of Edinburgh.
As yet, no date has been announced for the third season.
