Road Show (2008)
Words & Music: Stephen Sondheim
Book: John Weidman
Premise: Spurred on by a meagre inheritance, two real-life brothers – the roguish con-man Wilson Mizner and his more considered younger sibling Addison – seek their fortune in turn-of-the-century American. From the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s to the Florida real-estate boom and bust of the 1930s, we track the ups and downs of their relentless pursuit of the American Dream. Through a series of entrepreneurial and often dubious ventures, the brothers experience both success and failure, in a show that examines ambition, familial bonds and the ethical dilemmas of capitalism.
Background: In the 1950s, two articles in The New Yorker about the "The Legendary Mizner Brothers", written by Alva Johnstone, piqued the interest of Stephen Sondheim, who felt that their eccentric, idiosyncratic lives were ripe for musicalising. The idea was quickly quashed whem it was discovered that the rights to Johnstone's book had already been acquired, and that Irving Berlin was turning the material into a vehicle for Bob Hope. Fast-forward to 1993 – long after the option had expired – Sondheim and John Weidman were exploring ideas for a new show, and the subject of the Mizners arose. The pair began a long collaboration that would result first in Wise Guys (read with an incomplete score in 1997 and workshopped in 1999), then Gold!, then Bounce (presented commercially in 2003) and finally Road Show (produced in 2008). "A saga in four acts", as Sondheim calls it in Look, I Made a Hat! "A torturous evolution... a saga which took fourteen years to play itself out from first draft to last performance."
